Script Development Project 2014(click for pdf of below info) ‘Chosen Words’ is a project designed to support and develop new theatre writing in the North West. With processes based in current best practices of working with new writing, 6 writers shall be invited to join the project to develop a first draft play towards a production ready script.
With mentoring from award winning writer Rob Johnston and North West theatre director Charlie Mortimer, the writers shall develop their work in a supportive and professional process working with actors and dramaturgs from the beginnings of a play process. PROJECT DETAILS The writers’ and their first drafts shall be led through a series of 3 main sessions. Jun 2014 Each writer shall have their script read by professional performers and a director, after which the writer observes the investigation of the script by the team. Aug 2014 After a further consultation with our writing mentor and director a bespoke workshop of the writers’ draft shall be created using the skills of professional performers to assist. Sep 2014 All writers involved shall be invited to have a section of their script performed in a rehearsed reading at The Preston Tringe and to attend a panel discussion by industry professionals regarding current Best Practices of Working with New Writing at The Octagon, Bolton. Chaired by Elizabeth Newman (Head of New Writing) Jan 2015 All writers will have access to a final and third session to read have their re-drafted scripts and receive some final feedback on it at this point in the scripts’ existence. Most of the sessions are negotiable to support the natural creative process of the writer and their requirements but the final deadline for all sessions to be completed is 31st Jan 2015. The writers shall also receive a bursary to assist the development of their script and involvement in the project. HOW TO APPLY Please send in a relevant CV and first draft of a one act play 50-65 pages approx (even if it may have the potential of becoming a two act play), a short statement which tells us why you want to be involved in such a project. The piece must be original, adaptations and modernisations would not be appropriate for the project. We welcome diversity and are happy to consider writing for alternative performance space and various theatrical devices. We are looking to support writers based in the North West with sessions taking place in Preston, Lancashire but all applicants are welcome to apply. Submissions deadline is 29th May 2014 with interviews taking place over 9th and 11th June 2014.
